Diabetes And The Brain (Power Point presentation 6.9mb)

This is an incomplete translation from the French of Claude Bernard's experimental notes from the late 1840's and 1850's. In a series of animal experiments he demonstrated that a lesion to the brain could induce diabetes mellitus. We now know that several liver enzymes having to do with glucose production and storage are under the influence of the vagus (Xth) nerve. We also know that the Arcute nucleus of the hypothalamus senses glucose and insulin. Furthermore GLP-1 also binds to the hypothalamus. Thiazolidinediones appear to demonstrate CNS binding in the area of the pituitary but future work may indicate hypothalmic activity of TZD's also. This translation is a work in progress. My thanks to Dominique Engel, M.D. (Neurosurgery)for her work on this translation.
